The Gannet Gallery

For today I just wanted to share some photos of my favourite seabird.........sorry puffins, but its the extraordinary gannet.
What a stunning bird.
Most of my gannet sightings have been at RSPB Bempton Cliffs near Bridlington in East Yorkshire with a few others around the Scottish coasts.

Moths from the trap this week.

Here are some of the latest moths found in our garden whilst doing moth trapping.
I usually spend the first hour or two out with the trap and hobble as quick as I can around the garden chasing moths with a large net that are not going into the trap which maybe a strange sight to our neighbours:)

Mothing by the light of the moon.

Lime hawkmoth
Buff Ermine
Flame shoulder
Burnished Brass

That takes me to over 80 species of moth for the year.69 of them in the garden.

A Day on Inner Farne

I had the pleasure of spending a day on Inner Farne on June 24th 2013.It was amazing to be surrounded by so many seabirds and see them at such close quarters.

Puffin with sand eels.

The arctic terns were very terrotorial as they defended their nests alongside the footpath.A hat is neccessary;)

The terns came back with sand eels.

A lot of the shag nests had chicks in them.

A fantastic day and my first sightings of sandwich terns too.:)

Many thanks has to go to the National Trust for allowing us access on to the islands to see this
 amazing spectacle up close.

There was even plenty of birds at Seahouses harbour including lots of eiders with their ducklings.
